Entering into a new decade can be a mentally tough time for some people and for others, it's a time to reflect, make new goals and get excited to party. My friends, thankfully, age like Barbie and as we have slowly entered our thirties, we tend to make the most of this new age.
Before I got married, I had a roommate who was the MOST fun person. She can cook and throw a dinner party like no one else, will bust out singing at any moment and has a laugh that is so contagious, it will make anyone smile. But one of my favorite qualities is her craftiness and love of the 80's and 90's. I mean, who doesn't love a little Janet Jackson 'What Have You Done For Me Lately' or Salt-N-Pepa 'Push It'?
Well, my dear friend was the first of us to enter this foreign new age called 30, so naturally, her theme of choice? Thrift shop-old school. After lots of thrift shop shopping, we found some true gems both in decorations and in apparel. The menu was planned, guest list done and the cake was now being discussed. I had just done a fire truck cake for my stepson's 4th birthday party, so my roomie knew I was up for the challenge. The challenge being: Candyland. SO FUN, right?! Not only was it her favorite board game growing up, but her name is Casie, so we personalized this dream cake of hers to 'Casieland'.

The 99cent store is the place to go for randomly fun candy, if you were wondering where we found such appropriate treats. Sugar paper is the best secret ever, btw. With red sugar paper and white edible powder, I was able to create the best looking candy cane "Casieland". The ice cream palace was a careful construction project, but my base materials were cakes baked into ice cream cones with frosting, sprinkles and gumballs. The inside of the cake, was a surprise. Once cut open, POLKADOTS! Bottom line, the cake was a hit, the party was a hit, and being 30 isn't too bad after all.
